‘Straya Day

Hypnotised under a blue southern sky;

I hear, the twitter of birds from the roof,

And rustle of trees in a summer breeze.

Listening, musing, reflecting, the day through.

Soon, I hear, the soft purr of an engine

As a mate, comes home, consumed with folly;

Who, happy and drunk, bellows from the street:

“If only I could win the lottery”

As his laughter fades into his town house

My mind echoes on his conversation.

Images of last night’s doco weighs in

Playing with my thoughts, my meditation.

Today is about the lucky country;

Like a billabong of long time ago

Every nation has been to this great land

Our strong diversity – is all we know.

We are a nation of freedom and choice,

Although it hasn’t always been the case

But we are growing, with education;

And patience, and respect to each other’s place.

We get to breathe the sun and the sea.

We get to dance under the Southern Cross.

We get to laugh and sing to our hearts content.

We never have to be alone, sorry or lost.

Still the helicopter tears through the blue

Like a reminder that all is not fair,

It roars from the mountains to the city

Looking for hope, faith, someone to care.

So, the question of lottery? Is this.

We exist. We dance to our own beat

Knowing tomorrow will come, safe and sound.

We got the jackpot – on humanity!

Forgotten

One grey day on the Metro line

I looked upon an old past time.

Sitting in the middle of yesterday

a carousel that cannot play.

Bracing itself through the pouring rain

the tired horses show their pain.

Eroded down to their very core

their porcelain skins are no more.

Coarse are their once pristine petals

destined for a sea of metal.

Life

From the very start
Built upon the concrete floor
Tomorrow’s yesterday stands.
Twisting into the future.
Yet, firm on history’s page
sit the legends of a house.
A new house amongst the stars.

We came to the end
of our story. Something untold
in the fairy tales we had been taught.
There was no happy ever after.
The world was offering things
you could not, would not give me.
I made a choice.
I won’t go back.

Dear Grandfather

Grandfather,

The reason I write to you these chosen words
Is that you left too soon, that’s what I heard.

You said for my birthday we’d take to the sky.
But you got on a bus instead, and died.

You promised to take me to far away lands,
I drew us a map, got paint on my hands.

I recall long walks across the village green.
You told me stories and taught me to dream.

The old man that boarded route forty-seven
Did he know he’d be diverted straight up to heaven?

Was grandmother waiting for you, just like you said?
Mum said she was, but I am easily led.

London has changed, its not the same without you,
The world is a scary place now, please come home soon.

Love, Charlie.
