Look Up

Lost, the 21st century matrix

enchants the human drones

with special effects and magical tricks

their eyes glued to their “phones”.

Entangled in hyperreality

they weave a virtual web

closer but further from society

navigating from their bed.

The corporate franchise have cast their spell

they possess all our secrets

they hold the cards, but will never tell

they’ve channelled all the markets.

It’s time for the drones to take some action

awaken from their sleep

break away from the corporate faction

let go of their inner sheep.

The world is outside ready and waiting

there are faces to meet

real human connection is breathtaking

just look up, and see.

Farewell, Postman Pat

It’s time to hang your hat, sir.
Your work has come to an end.

Harry S Alford My Grandfather the Postman
I’ll miss the hand waves and the bells
of a much beloved friend.
Seeing you early each morning
counting out the coloured cards
placing them through each letterbox
with a smile, wink and kind regards.
Rain or shine, you were always there
the glue that held the villages
together with paper and ink
and postcards of flowery bridges.
But, the wheels of time push progress
and you have been found wanting.
Time, she has made you redundant
and so Death has begun knocking.
It’s time to hang up your hat, sir.
Your work has come to an end.
We’ll remember you in our scrapbooks
and label you, a long lost friend.

Poem was inspired by an article in The Age: Are you ready to abandon snail mail

From MiniPad to KeyPad

so here you are, she said you were coming
you’re not exactly what I expected
i have been trying to send you signals
i am still waiting for your reply
what, are you afraid of me? or something?
i won’t bite you. I don’t have teeth, come on!
she’s waiting for you, can’t say she’s impressed…
your maker said we would be instant friends
but, still you sit there ignoring us both
not even sending us a flicker of light
you are just a big black sheet of nothing
you’re going back if you don’t do something
so make a big noise; flash all about
and talk to her or she will throw you out
